Animal Shelter HVAC Design: Ventilation, Odor and Disease-Control Planning

Animal shelter HVAC design affects animal health, staff comfort, odor, humidity, cleaning and energy consumption. It is also one of the most misunderstood parts of shelter planning. A higher airflow number by itself does not guarantee good performance.

The system should be designed around actual populations, room functions and operating protocols by qualified mechanical professionals working closely with the shelter veterinarian, leadership and architect.

Start with population and risk zones

Identify which rooms house healthy animals, incoming animals, vulnerable populations, medical patients, quarantine and isolation. Then define which air relationships support the organization’s protocols. Architectural doors and vestibules, staff behavior and mechanical pressure must work together.

Control the direction of air movement

Pressure relationships can help discourage air from moving from higher-risk areas toward lower-risk areas. But pressure depends on a balanced system and actual door operation. A room shown as negative on a diagram may not perform that way if doors remain open, exhaust fails or transfer paths are not coordinated.

Provide effective outdoor air and exhaust

Locate devices and controls where they can withstand the expected moisture and cleaning practices. Protect equipment from direct spray. Coordinate floor drains, slopes, hose use and drying so the building systems support rather than fight cleaning procedures.

Make controls understandable
